LEGISLATIVE UPDATE:
The Conference
Committee on the state budget has reportedly agreed to
fund Proclamation 2010
at 85% of the TEA's request.
House Bill 4294,
which would allow school districts to use textbook money
to purchase hardware for "electronic textbooks", has
overwhelmingly passed the Senate. At a Senate hearing
May 19, TCAT expressed concerns that there is no
long-term plan for the integration of technology into
the classroom.
Although Sen. Florence Shapiro assured that the bill
will maintain the emphasis on content, it will, in fact,
divert instructional material money (both physical and
electronic) to electronic hardware.
